The Council Has Spoken!! This Weeks’ Watcher’s Council Results

The Council has spoken, the votes have been cast, and the results are in for this week’s Watcher’s Council match up.

“If there is ever a fascist takeover in America, it will come not in the form of storm troopers kicking down doors but with lawyers and social workers saying. “I’m from the government and I’m here to help” – Jonah Goldberg, Liberal Fascism

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery..” – Sir Winston Churchill

“I have to tell you, you know, it’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama’s speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg.” – MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, in heat

In this weeks’ winning entry Bookworm Room asks the question always bubbling under the surface for today’s Progressives…Dear Democrats: If this administration can’t get socialism right, how will any administration, ever?

Of course, Bookworm answers that question in her own inimitable style. Here’s a slice:

Going into the 2008 election, Democrats devoutly believed two things: First, they believed that socialism could be made to work. Second, they believed that Barack Obama has every quality necessary to effectuate American-style socialism.

Let’s examine both these beliefs a little further. First, let’s talk about the belief that socialism can be made to work. I’m sure all of you have had or seen this interaction: A person of ordinary common sense with some understanding of world history and current events, says to the ardent Progressive or Democrat (henceforth “DemProg”), “Socialism has never worked in any society in which its been tried.”

In the old days, the DemProg would point to Europe as an example of successful socialism, and then you’d have to explain to them that this success was due in significant part to the fact that America took care of most of Europe’s defense costs, leaving it with more money to expend on socialist welfare programs. Nowadays, of course, with Europe an economic basket case that’s scarily trending to Europe’s version of “conservativism” — i.e., hate-filled, race-based nationalism — Europe is gone as an example of socialism that works.

Back to that conversation between the sensible person and the DemProg: When the sensible person points out that socialism has always failed, both socially and economically, the DemProg always responds with some variation of “It just hasn’t been done right.” These variations range from noting that too many socialist revolutions have occurred in agrarian, not industrial, societies, so they couldn’t have the proper type of socialism that Marx envisioned (Russia, China, North Korea, etc.); to the problem with cults of personality (that would be North Korean socialism); to “it’s all America’s fault” (that’s Cuban socialism); it got taken over by right-wing fascists (both Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany, both of which explicitly billed themselves as socialist” movements); to “damaging vestiges of imperialism” (that’s would cover most African socialism).

ut in America, the DemProg says, if we could just elect the right politician, we wouldn’t have any of those problems. In a country with America’s vast wealth, strong infrastructure, industrial and commercial base, absence of powerful enemies, and constitutional check on personality cults, we would finally do socialism right.

To do socialism right, of course, one would need the right kind of president, and a Congress that he could bend to his will. In 2007/2008, we were promised that Obama would be these things and more. First off, we were promised that Obama had the intelligence to get the job done. Michael Beschloss, the highly respected presidential historian, in an interview with Don Imus, waxed rhapsodical about Obama:

Historian Michael Beschloss: Yeah. Even aside from the fact of electing the first African American President and whatever one’s partisan views this is a guy whose IQ is off the charts — I mean you cannot say that he is anything but a very serious and capable leader and — you know — You and I have talked about this for years …

Imus: Well. What is his IQ?

Historian Michael Beschloss: … our system doesn’t allow those people to become President, those people meaning people THAT smart and THAT capable

Imus: What is his IQ?

Historian Michael Beschloss: Pardon?

Imus: What is his IQ?

Historian Michael Beschloss: Uh. I would say it’s probably – he’s probably the smartest guy ever to become President.

Imus: That’s not what I asked you. I asked you what his IQ was.

Historian Michael Beschloss: You know that I don’t know and I’d have to find someone with more expertise …

Imus: You don’t know.

In fact, Michael, to this day, nobody knows what Obama’s IQ is, or even what his grades were.

Establishment Republicans surrender on social issues to protect their incumbency

In a recent interview with KSL radio, Senator Orrin Hatch—a member of the G.O.P. Hall of Shame for abandoning conservative principles for political benefit—added to his lofty hall of shame credentials when he decided that being a supporter of traditional marriage was simply too passé to demand any more of his attention: “Let’s face it: anybody who does not believe that gay marriage is going to be the law of the land just hasn’t been observing what’s going on,” said Hatch. “Sooner or later gay marriage is probably going to be approved by the Supreme Court of the United States, and certainly as the people in this country move toward it, especially young people. I don’t think that’s the right way to go, on the other hand, I do accept whatever the courts have to say.” Using that logic, Hatch should stop trying to defend the unborn. After all, the courts have made murdering your unborn baby the law of the land. Why bother being pro-life when the issue has been settled? Actually, that’s a rhetorical question, because John McCain—another G.O.P. Hall of Shame enshrinee—already has that one covered, as we reported when we selected him for enshrinement. If you’re talking about votes, […]

Democrats demand Shinseki’s termination

More Democrats are calling for Gen. Shinseki’s resignation. Translation: Blah, blah…Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. We get it. Democrats are outraged, outraged I tell you, about the VA scandal. Frankly, I don’t care that they’re expressing outrage, mostly because I’m thinking that it’s faux outrage. I don’t care that firing Gen. Shinseki won’t fix the […]

Dr. Ben Carson’s alternative to Obamacare – Part One

In the usual back and forth between the Democrats who want socialized medicine and the rest of the world who don’t, the Saul Alinsky-ites of the left often rail about the lack of an alternative from the Republicans. Besides the fact that this is total bovine fecal matter—Bobby Jindal’s proposal for example—there have been many alternatives offered to improve our previous system without nuking it and turning it into the system that brought you the V.A. scandal. Enter Dr. Ben Carson. As the new chairman of the Save Our Healthcare Project (a part of the American Legacy PAC), Dr. Carson is releasing his ideas on how we can replace Obamacare with something that might actually work:  It’s clear Obamacare isn’t working. We’d like it gone. But you can’t beat something with nothing, and going back to the status quo is not acceptable either. The goal of the Save Our Healthcare Project is to build support for a series of positive health reforms to replace Obamacare, and help to elect, in 2014, a new class of leaders in Washington who will work to implement them. We begin today by announcing the Save Our Healthcare “Remedy for a Free & Healthy America,” our simple, […]

17 Trillion And Still Counting More

With all of the scandals from this incompetent and corrupt administration flooding the political zone, there is one issue that has fallen in the background, almost never mentioned anymore.  Our increasing, at a dangerous pace, national debt.  It is now at an unbelievable 17.57 trillion and counting.  Unless this trend is countered soon, this, more than all of the other scandals combined, could bring down our country.

Thomas Jefferson

There have been warnings about why a national debt is dangerous for the health of our country for hundreds of years.  In 2010 Rep. Bob Goodlatte [from Politico] quoted this warning from Thomas Jefferson:  “to preserve [the] independence [of the people,] we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude.”

From Fox Business: “The Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday [Sept. 2013] the nation’s debt is on an unsustainable path and warned that by 2038 if current law continues federal debt held by the public would hit 100% of GDP.  The nonpartisan CBO added by the same time frame if no action by Congress is taken entitlement spending would increase to 14% of GDP, or twice the average over the last 40 years.”

Put simply, from the Old and Tried blog: ” a constant state of increasing indebtedness either means less money for government programs or inflation. Only so much additional tax revenue can be collected before it begins to hurt the economy and that revenue cannot payoff existing debt and pay for increasingly costly government programs.”

From Defeat the Debt blog: “A growing debt means higher taxes, painful cuts in government services, job loss, and a very real danger of economic catastrophe. Unless we stop this out of control spending now, the consequences could be devastating.”  “The debt is dangerous because it isn’t under control. We cannot force anyone to loan us money, and the interest we pay can become more expensive. If that happens, our expenses go up, but our income doesn’t – so we sink even further into debt.  If investors are unwilling to lend the U.S. money, the government can go to the Federal Reserve. The Fed can literally create money out of nothing (print it), and then lend it to the government. But creating new money has a catch — inflation. Printing money can lead to a vicious cycle, as inflation devalues the money already in the economy.”

From CNN Money in late 2012, Admiral Michael Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated that this unsustainable debt is also a threat to our national security: “A nation with our current levels of unsustainable debt … cannot hope to sustain for very long its superiority from a military perspective, or its influence in world affairs.”

Senator Rubio warns about debt

Senator Marco Rubio, R-FL, also warned of the national security threat that our debt poses in 2012: “The President’s failure to tackle our debt is killing our economy, weakening our national security and threatening the very essence of America’s exceptionalism.”

Yes, it seems as if the unsustainable national debt issue has faded in the background because of the so many scandals from this administration.  Hopefully, at some point this issue will finally be addressed.  Let us hope that time comes before those politicians and economists who have been issuing dire warnings of the pending disaster economically and on the national security front to our country because of an unsustainable national debt are proven to be correct.

“Tales” in an effort to help out the late great Mr. Ford, has taken it upon itself to revive 16, err 17 tons, so that it will remain seared in the minds of Tennessee Ernie Ford fans forever.

Of course, the singer’s name of this video will be changed to protect the innocent.

PROUD FATHER

With Father’s Day coming up, I have to confess that my buttons are busting.
My oldest son, Tom Junior, was a trial judge in Michigan for 24 years. Now retired, he sent me a copy of a motion he will be making tomorrow in the Ingham County Circuit Court.

Here it is:

MOTION TO ADMIT AZIN ARBAB TO THE STATE BAR OF MICHIGAN

May 29, 2014

May it please the Court:

It is my profound privilege to move for the admission of one Azin Arbab for membership to the State Bar of Michigan, which will entitle her to practice law as a licensed attorney in the great state of Michigan.

As exhibit A, I would like to offer for Your Honor’s review Ms. Arbab’s short vitae.  You will note that after successfully completing her course of study at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, she recently passed the Michigan bar examination.

Judge Aquilina, I am introducing you to an individual who represents the very essence of what this great land we call the United States of America is all about.  The land of opportunity.  The land of refuge.  The land of freedom.

I first met Azin while she was auditing my Criminal Law class at Lansing Community College.  It was immediately apparent to me that she was a particularly bright, ambitious and serious student.  Later, she asked me to mentor her from time to time during law school.  During our discussions, I learned a great deal about this woman.  Her story is like so many immigrant tales of our nation’s past that form the very foundation of this country.

Azin is greatly influenced by her father.  His behavior, choices, personality and lectures have had a profound effect on her.  His acts of courage and perseverance in the face of tremendous adversity have served as a motivating force in her life.

Her father was born in Iran to a wealthy family. However, his comfortable childhood changed dramatically during the Iranian revolution.

Azin’s family is of the Bahá’í Faith.  Wikipedia describes it as a monotheistic religion emphasizing the spiritual unity of all humankind. Three core principles establish a basis for Bahá’í teachings and doctrine: the unity of God, that there is only one God who is the source of all creation; the unity of religion, that all major religions have the same spiritual source and come from the same God; and the unity of humanity, that all humans have been created equal, and that diversity of race and culture are seen as worthy of appreciation and acceptance.  According to the Bahá’í Faith’s teachings, the human purpose is to learn to know and love God through such methods as prayer, reflectionand being of service to humanity.

The religion was consolidated in Iran, where its followers suffer intense persecution, the origins of which stem from a variety of Bahá’í teachings inconsistent with traditional Islamicbelief.  Thus Bahá’ís are seen as apostates from Islam, and, according to some, must choose between repentance and death.

It is well proven that the members of the Bahá’í community in Iranhave been subjected to unwarranted arrests, false imprisonment, beatings, torture, unjustified executions, confiscation and destruction of property owned by individuals and the Bahá’í community, denialof employment, denial of government benefits, denial of civil rights and liberties, and denial of access to higher education.

Azin’s family is a testimony to this persecution.  The post Islamic government demanded her family to become Muslim.  When her father courageously refused in the face of the threat, the government seized his property.  Having lost all the comforts of a good life, he soon began to struggle financially.  Despite this rude awakening, her father never lost hope.  Instead, he persevered by working hard to maintain his family’s quality of life.  His steadfast beliefs and spirituality lifted his family above the pain of persecution and the loss of materiality.  Through his effort, a new life for himself and his family ensued.

Her father’s heroism has inspired Azin to always work hard to achieve the best out of life, but without compromising her goals and strong beliefs.

Azin’s family members, who now live with her, are here to celebrate this momentous occasion, with the exception of her father who is determined to remain in Iran to continue the battle against persecution.

Clearly, her parents have taught her the best ideals in life, one of which is emblazoned on her soul: do not accept injustice.  Like her parents, she, too, has experience.

Because of her religion, the Iranian government did not let her have equal rights with other Iranian citizens.  Despite prejudice and injustice, she refused to give in.  Azin went to the university in Tehran where she earned a bachelor of law and worked as a paralegal in the court system, even though Baha’is are not allowed to do so.  She knew that the government would never allow her to work as a lawyer, but she chose the law because she wanted to change the law.  Her passion for the law is obvious.

When Azin asked me to do this, she wrote:  “For me law means real life.  In law we are talking about people, human rights, life and death.  Without law, we cannot live.  It’s just like water which is necessary for life.”

She finished her university studies one year earlier than any other student.  She has vast knowledge and experience concerning Iranian and Islamic law.  She even spent a year in Turkey studying Turkish law and courts.

She is a driven individual.  Finishing Cooley in 2 years, she moved to New York, passed their bar examination and returned to Michigan to take this state’s examination.

This profession is her passion.  She tells me that abstract logic in the study of law is easily trumped by learning through experience.  From my end of the spectrum, she is right on.

There are three great professions in the world that attend to the mind, body and soul.  The medical profession attends to the body, focusing on health, healing and survival.  The clergy attends to the soul, emphasizing forgiveness, redemption and salvation.   And the law attends to the mind, realizing justice, freedom, liberty and peace.

I humbly request that Your Honor grant my motion at this time and allow this determined, committed and passionate immigrant to begin her new life in the practice of one of the three greatest professions known to mankind.  I have no doubt that she will make a difference in this world while preparing herself for the next.
