Quietly robbing Peter (and his parents) to pay Peter
Several things are abundantly clear about the federal student loan program. The first thing that’s clear is that it’s been a mix of blessings and curses to students. Another thing that’s clear is that it’s a way of hiding the fact that the cost of tuition is too high. The third thing that’s clear is that it first robs Peter to borrow money to Peter. Actually, it’s more likely that the federal government is robbing from Peter’s parents today to borrow money to Peter. In return for doing Peter this ‘favor’, Peter ‘gets’ to pay the money that the federal government took from Peter’s parent with a tidy interest rate tacked on, thereby adding interest rates to the injury. To court the vote of young people, President Obama is promising to steal … Read entire article »

We Can’t Wait, GOP Edition
President Obama’s mantra recently starts with “We can’t wait…” According to this wayward president, we can’t wait to go deeper into debt. We can’t wait to cripple America’s economy with high energy prices. Most importantly, according to President Obama, we can’t wait while the Democrat-controlled Senate sits on its hands rather than voting on the House of Representatives’ serious, job-creating proposals. Phil Kerpen’s NRO op-ed makes the case why we can and should wait: Consider, from that same day-after press conference, how Obama answered a question about what would happen to cap-and-trade, his signature plan to bankrupt the coal industry and make energy prices skyrocket. This was the day after dozens of House Democrats had been defeated largely because of their support for the bill, which died without even being considered … Read entire article »

Mitt’s Undoing?
The media and the GOP establishment have hopped on the Mitt bandwagon. That isn’t surprising but it’s telling. The GOP establishment isn’t in touch with main street. That isn’t surprising but it’s disturbing. During Saturday’s edition of the Journal Editorial Report, WSJ columnist Dorothy Rabinowitz objected when host Paul Gigot said that people couldn’t be sure what to expect from Gov. Romney. She said “You do know where he stands in my view. You know he doesn’t want to transform the government of the United States or the system of the United States. We have here a candidate who can win. And there’s nobody else in this race who can make that claim. Thankfully, James Freeman jumped in, saying “I don’t believe in the electability argument. I think people are actually looking … Read entire article »

Concrete national goals, and how “we the people” can make them a reality
Back on August 8, 2011, somebody outlined these goals for fixing our current Obama-caused mess: We need to stop this deficit spending, balance our budget, repeal Obamacare, cancel all unused stimulus funds, and reform our entitlement programs. We have to have an adult conversation about our spending commitments; circumstances have changed, and we must adapt. I know none of this will be easy, but, “thick” or not, the average American outside the D.C. politico bubble knows that we no longer have a choice! We will have entitlement reform and a balanced budget; it’s just a matter of how. We can do it ourselves in a calm, methodical, and responsible manner, or we can wait for the world’s capital markets to ram it down on us. Let’s be responsible and do it … Read entire article »

The Centre Cannot Hold
Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.* Although the man in the White House is blaming everyone except the tooth fairy for the nation’s economic woes: George Bush, Congress, Republicans, Europe, the weather, the Japanese earthquake, Standard and Poor’s, the Tea party and, and … He might consider looking in the mirror or at his progressive brethren in university faculties. They have been peddling their ideological wares to legions of vulnerable young people already conditioned to believe in the higher morality of income redistribution by the public … Read entire article »

The Stock market is in free fall.
Oddly the stated reason for this free fall is debt. Not just ours, but some European countries too. In a move unheard of in the United States, President Sarkozy of France cut short his vacation to deal with his nations crisis. Our President? He goes on a bus tour. Meanwhile the House and Senate are acting like a bunch of kids in a choose up game of baseball. Picking the kids they like best to get the unconstitutional group of 12 lawmakers called the super congress together. I really do mean children. That is what the boys and girls in DC seem like. A bunch of kids fighting over the rules of the game. Well kids the rules are already written and we need to enforce them. You sit back as the … Read entire article »

“Obama’s Weak Leadership and Wrong Direction” Herman Cain
Forget President Obama’s 40 percent (and still falling) approval rating. That just means that less than 45 percent of those surveyed have no clue about the direction of the country. Or, those same people support the president’s weakening of America. And please spare me the worn-out excuses that it was Bush’s fault, or things are bad because it was worse than he thought. Consider the facts: President Obama ended the Space Shuttle program as of two weeks ago when the last shuttle returned safely from its mission. We will now have to thumb a ride from the Russians if we want to get to the Space Station, and it will cost us dearly. John F. Kennedy’s vision of our leadership in space technology and exploration will soon be a national nightmare. We … Read entire article »

Return of the Stupid Party; Healing the Wounds
It’s evident that Republicans are reverting to their Stupid Party habits. It isn’t enough that the TEA Party’s darlings have changed the debate on the debt ceiling. It isn’t enough, in their minds, that the debt ceiling increases that’ve passed during Speaker Boehner’s watch are the first debt ceiling increases that’ve had spending cuts tied to them. Apparently, some TEA Party organizations are slamming people like Col. Alan West for being RINOs. That’s led to Col. West defending himself on Laura Ingraham’s show this morning. Bully for him and bully for Ms. Laura for her steadfast support for Col. West. Here’s the tape of their conversation: This leads to a more important point that needs to happen sooner rather than later. First, some of the TEA Party organizations’ leaders are letting their … Read entire article »
