Potential Game-Changer: Perry dropping out this am
According to this tweet, CNN is reporting that Rick Perry will drop out today: @PeterHambyCNNPeter Hamby Rick Perry will drop out of the Republican presidential race today, two sources tell CNN. If that happens, most of Perry’s votes will go to Newt Gingrich. The two are good friends away from the campaign trail. Newt even wrote the forward to Gov. Perry’s book. Wow. Bill Jacobson is right in saying that things are moving fast: Updates: Perry just scheduled an 11 a.m. press conference. Via HotAir, Perry will endorse Newt. Things are moving fast: The Daily Caller has learned that 100 tea party leaders from 25 states will announce Thursday that they are supporting Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and will form a coalition called Tea Partiers With Newt. It’ll be interesting to see the media’s reaction to Gov. Perry’s … Read entire article »

The SC GOP Primary: Vultures, capitalists, evangelicals and gamecocks
Palmetto State poised for pragmatic pick over preening vulture anti-capitalists South Carolinians have seen too many shuttered textile plants never visited by Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital to fall for Newt-Perry slurs that blame the buyers of companies already failing due to the internal policies of the sellers or external policies of governments. Vultures eat the dead. Bain, under Romney, saved jobs worth saving in the private sector (unlike the now government motors taxpayer -funded welfare “jobs” saved by President Barack Obama at a loss) by salvaging the identifiable living and the profits earned saved and created jobs, sight unseen: The problem with the entire discussion is that jobs are being used as the only measure of the “good” done by Romney. Profits are also good as they allow companies to grow and as they … Read entire article »

Gamecock Open Thread: Who is Perry supporters’ Second Choice
This former Rick Perry supporter recently announced his post-vulture Bain capitalist-attacks decision to express my preference that Mitt Romney (in a close call over Rick Santorum, with Jon Huntsman now a distant third for me) win the South Carolina primary as I think it critical to the conservative movement that a win my native state not be attributed to anti-capitalist, class warfare-aiding attacks. I think a win by either Newt Gingrich or Rick Perry would be bad for the movement. I also think that Florida has now edged S.C. as the most important Republican Party contest. My question to current Perry supporters is who they think is the second best choice. Authored By GameCock gamecock's blog Authored By GameCock gamecock's blog … Read entire article »

Mitt Romney: Arrogant SOB
Mitt Romney’s always had a higher opinion of himself as a politician than his political record warrants. That’s why I’m not surprised by Mitt’s statements during his interview with Special Report’s Bret Baier aren’t that surprising: Asked by Fox News’s Bret Baier in an interview Tuesday whether Gingrich could beat President Obama, Romney said: “I think to get President Obama out of office, you’re going to have to bring something to the race that’s different than what he brings.” “He’s a lifelong politician. I think you have to have the credibility of understanding how the economy works. And I do. And that’s one reason I’m in this race.” All politicians have egos. They couldn’t survive without them. Still, Mitt’s statements smack me as being Grade A BS. Saying that the man who put … Read entire article »

Newt takes impressive lead in national polling
There’ve been a few recent polls on the GOP presidential race that could be called outliars. This morning, Majority Opinion Research announced that their polling shows Newt opening up a significant lead in a national poll: Newt Gingrich has opened a sizable lead over Mitt Romney in the first national poll taken since the former Speaker of the House earned the key endorsement of the New Hampshire Union Leader, showing Gingrich with a nine-percentage point lead over the former Massachusetts governor. The poll, conducted by Majority Opinion Research Sunday night, showed Gingrich leading the Republican field with 32 percent of support from those surveyed. Romney earned 23 percent, while Herman Cain rounded out the top three with 14 percent of the vote. Ron Paul led the remainder of the field with 6 … Read entire article »

Cain can’t deter Iran after Wofford College/Spartanburg, S.C. debate
[A post-Florida Gator-devouring USC gamecock's Stone Mountain of Georgia roost-view of his undergrad alma mater, Wofford College and Spartanburg hometown's hosting of the South Carolina, CBS/National Journal, Republican Party presidential debate] Let the Big Dog eat! The motto of Wofford Terriers’ (pictured) sports teams is “Let the Big Dog eat!”, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich looked like the Big Dog eating away at GOP presidential nomination opponents’ leads last Saturday night. The Speaker’s mastery of foreign policy was equaled only by Former Massachusett’s Governor Mitt Romney, both of whom made clear that they would be willing to take unilateral military action to prevent the Islamist mullahs ruling the terrorist state of Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Unfortunately for those, like me, that consider it imperative that any President of the United States maintain … Read entire article »

Will Cain’s gaffe get him the hook?
Most of the reviews said that Herman Cain survived Saturday night’s debate. Most cite as fact that Cain didn’t make any soundbite-worthy gaffes. I don’t know if that’s accurate. I’d consider this reply to Major Garrett’s querie to be a major gaffe: Major Garrett: A quick follow up, Mr. Cain. You say assisting the opposition, would you entertain military assistance and opposition? Herman Cain: I would not entertain…military opposition. I’m talkin’ about to help the opposition movement within the country. And then there’s one other thing that we could do. We could deploy our ballistic missile defense capable (UNINTEL) war ships strategically in that part of the world. We have the biggest fleet of those warships in the world. And we could use them strategically in the event that they were able … Read entire article »

True Believers vs. Thoughtful People
Much is being written about how Herman Cain hasn’t suffered in the polls since the start of his mishandling of the sexual harassment article. There’s a simple explanation for that phenomenon: Cain’s base is willing to overlook his shortcomings. And he has a sizable base. The thing is, though, that this week has damaged Mr. Cain in ways that will be exposed in the weeks ahead. First, Cain’s at his best when he’s talked about his great American story, how he grew up in the South at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, how he’d gotten a good education, then embarked on a successful business career. It’s particularly unattractive to play the Clarence Thomas Card after talking about how he overcame true racism and bigotry. Mr. Cain can’t have it both ways. … Read entire article »

Cain’s disappearing MO-mentum
GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain hadn’t campaigned in Iowa since the Iowa state fair. Based on this article, it’s a safe bet that this trip to Iowa won’t help Cain. Here’s one thing that’ll trip Cain up mightily: Perry, Gingrich, Paul, and Santorum all spent time greeting voters at the Iowa State Fairgrounds before or after their remarks; Bachmann arrived late and Cain declined to spend much time with voters as he was ushered in and out of the room. As a neighbor to Iowa, I’ve heard more than a few stories that Iowa voters demand that presidential candidates pay attention to them. In person. Pressing the flesh. Gabbing with them in diners and cafes. Being approachable is a difference-maker in Iowa. Just ask Mitt Romney whether his money was able to overcome … Read entire article »

Newt wins debate, Perry has his best debate, Mitt has a difficult night
From the candidates’ introductions, Newt Gingrich owned Tuesday night’s debate. Here’s what Speaker Gingrich said in his introduction: FORMER REP. NEWT GINGRICH (R-GA), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I’m Newt Gingrich. And unlike President Obama, I’m glad to be in Las Vegas. I think it’s a great place to have a convention. (APPLAUSE) And, and when I am president, we’re going to replace class warfare with cooperation so all Americans can get off food stamps and onto paychecks. Everyone on stage and in the auditorium got a hearty laugh from Newt’s calling Vegas “a great place to have a convention.” It’s a stark contrast with President Obama’s ill-advised statements about people blowing their paychecks in Vegas. That was hardly the only winning line for Speaker Gingrich. Mitt suffered his first difficult night last night. He got rattled when Gov. … Read entire article »
